HC Deb 09 March 1904 vol 131 cc563-4
MR. BUCHANAN (Perthshire, E.)

To ask the Secretary of State for War if he will state how many Presbyterian chaplains, commissioned or acting, were employed during the South African War, and how many belonged to the Established Church, and how many to the United Free Church respectively, and what was the amount of money paid to the ministers of the two denominations for their services in the war.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Arnold-Forster.) Six commissioned chaplains of the Presbyterian denomination were employed during the South African war, two belonging to the United Free Church, one to the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, and three to the Established Church. In addition to these there were thirty -two civilian Presbyterian clergymen at one time or another on Army duty. From the information at the disposal of the War Office, it is not possible to distinguish the particular branch of the Presbyterian Church to which they belonged, and accordingly the amount of money paid to each cannot be determined.
