To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will state what was the number of white men employed in the Transvaal gold mines in the latest month for which returns are available.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton.) The latest return of the number of white men employed in the Transvaal gold mines is that for April, 1904, 12,740, who were at work on the last full working day.
