HC Deb 28 June 1904 vol 136 c1410
MR. CATHCART WASON (Orkney and Shetland)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if, in view of the importance of the questions which must arise in East Africa, he will state to the House what qualifications of Sir Donald Stewart recommended him to the Government as Administrator there; if the appointment is of a temporary nature, or if it will expire when the Colonial Office takes over the administration next year.

THE UNDER-SECRETARY or STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS(Earl PERCY,) Kensington, S.

Sir Donald Stewart has shown, by his successful administration of Ashanti, that he possesses the qualifications required for dealing with the affairs of the East Africa Protectorate. The selection has been made after consultation with the Colonial Office, and the transfer of the protectorate will not terminate the appointment.
