HC Deb 23 June 1904 vol 136 cc992-3
MR. RENWICK (Newcastle-on-Tyne)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether arrangements are being made to protect the public and railway servants from contact with live rails between platforms at stations where electric trains stop or pass through.

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I understand that on most railways which are being worked electrically the live rail is guarded where it passes through stations. Inquiries have been ordered into two recent accidents arising from electrical working, and when the reports of these inquiries are received the question of the precautions to be taken will be considered.

MR. RENWICK

Might I inform the right hon. Gentleman that I can give him the names of certain lines on which in many important places live rails are unprotected. It is an extremely important question, and I hope the right hon. Gentleman will take notice of it.
