HC Deb 21 June 1904 vol 136 cc703-4
MR. HAYDEN (Roscommon, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if his attention has been called to the fact that the salaries of certain teachers in national schools in Ireland are determined on the basis of attendance, and that where the attendance does not exceed twelve the salary is £12 per annum; and, if so, will he take steps to remedy this arrangement.

MR. WYNDHAM

The Question refers presumably to the class of teacher known as Manual Instructress. The rules governing payments to such a teacher provide that where the average attendance is less than twenty she shall be paid a capitation grant of £1 for each girl in average attendance. Where the average attendance is twenty or over, but where the total attendance does not warrant the employment of an assistant, payment is at the uniform rate of £24 a year.
