To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the minimum wage offered to natives recruited in Central Africa for the Transvaal mines will now be reduced from 1s. 6d. to 1s. per diem for the first six months after their arrival at the mines, so as to correspond with the minimum wage offered to Chinese coolies.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton.) The British Central African natives now † See (4) Debates, cvii., 1343. being recruited are, I understand, to be engaged under the same conditions as those recruited last year, as stated at page 14 of Cd. 1950.
