HC Deb 09 June 1904 vol 135 cc1224-5
MR. LUNDON () Limerick, E.

On behalf of the hon. Member for the St. Patrick Division of Dublin, I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that Irish railway companies make it a condition of their service that all employees shall join the benefit societies managed by the company; and whether, seeing that this condition discourages membership to the-Amalgamated Railway Servants' Society, he will consider the advisability of taking steps to prevent this interference with, these men's liberty.

The PRESIDENT of the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Gerald Balfour,) Leeds, Central

I have no information that the Irish railway companies make such a condition as the hon. Member refers to. The matter does not appear to be one in which the Board of Trade could: intervene in the manner suggested.
