HC Deb 08 June 1904 vol 135 cc1076-7
MR. FIELD (Dublin, St. Patrick)

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has received a resolution from the Dublin Victuallers Association protesting against the assessments sought to be levied on the members; and, if so, whether he will make inquiries into this complaint with a view to having the assessments made upon a fair basis.

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. AUSTEN CHAMBERLAIN,) Worcestershire, E.

I have received the resolution from the Dublin Victuallers Association to which the hon. Member refers, but this is not a matter in which I can take action. Anyone who is dissatisfied with his assessment has a right of appeal to the Special Commissioners of Taxes, from whose decision a further appeal may be made to the Recorder or County Court Judge, as the case may be, the authority in Dublin being the Recorder, and I am unable to interfere with the ordinary procedure prescribed by the law.
