HC Deb 29 July 1904 vol 139 c81
MR. HENNIKER HEATON (Canterbury)

To ask the First Lord of the Treasury whether, in view of the impossibility of carrying the Port of London Bill. he will now accede to the request of the Corporation of the City of London and the Thames Conservancy Board for a Departmental inquiry into the practicability of the Thames barrage scheme, to be carried on during the recess, so that a decision may be arrived at and the views of engineers ascertained before further legislation is undertaken during next session of Parliament.

(Answered by Mr. A. J. Balfour.) I fear I can only repeat what I have already stated, namely, that there does not appear to be sufficient expert support for the project in question to justify the inquiry suggested by my hon. friend.
