§ DR. THOMPSON
I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware that the Central Midwives Board have appointed nurses to examine candidates for the diploma in midwifery; and, if so, will he direct that candidates for a midwifery diploma must be examined by qualified physicians and surgeons.
§ THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. COCHRANE,) Ayrshire, N.
No, Sir; I think this is not the case. I understand that the whole scheme of examination is still under the consideration of the 1338 Central Midwives Board. That Board is, however, left by the statute free to exercise its discretion in the appointment of examiners, and I have no power to give directions in the matter.
