To ask the Secretary of State for War on what occasions since 1880 the Reserves have been called out; how many Reservists responded on each occasion; and what was the total number of troops employed in each of the campaigns.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Arnold-Forster.) The Reserves have been called out on the following occasions since 1880:—

1882, partial mobilisation;

1885, partial mobilisation;

1899–1900, general mobilisation.

The numbers who joined on each occasion are as follows:—

1882, 10,583, or 90.8 per cent. of those called up;

1885, 2,205 or 87.0 per cent. of those called up;

1899–1900, 74,379, or 91.67 per cent. of those called up.

The total number of troops employed in each of the campaigns are:—

1899–1902 448,435
