HC Deb 01 July 1904 vol 137 cc319-20
MR. CLAUDE HAY (Shoreditch, Hoxton)

To ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether he is aware that in the Statistical Department of the Customs several junior assistant clerks have been awarded a special checking allowance of £30 per annum; that these clerks have less than seven years service, and that they have been selected for this promotion, passing over many senior assistant clerks of approved character and ability, with three times their length of service; and. if so, whether he can give any special reason in explanation.

(Answered by Mr. Victor Cavendish.) I am informed that there have been three such selections, and that the junior assistants clerk w ere so selected because-they were more capable than any on the list of senior assistant clerks.
