HC Deb 11 August 1904 vol 140 cc217-8
CAPTAIN NORTON (Newington, W.)

To ask the Postmaster-General, whether, seeing that private employers are compelled to safeguard the clothing of those they employ, which is left on the premises of the employers while the employees are at work, and to pay compensation in case of loss, he will arrange for similar treatment as regards postal employees.

(Answered by Lord Stanley.) Reasonable precautions are taken to safeguard the clothing of Post Office servants in their offices, and I regret that I cannot see my way to lay down any general rule for granting compensation in such cases. Special cases will be dealt with on their merits, as heretofore; but any decision to allow such claims in general would be open to obvious objections.
