HC Deb 04 August 1904 vol 139 cc976-7
CAPTAIN ELLICE (St. Andrews Burghs)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for what offence Dr. Januaris is now in confinement in Crete; and what is the nature of the sentence to which he has been condemned.

EARL PERCY

Mr. Januaris was sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Cretan Court of First Instance on the charge of insulting the person of the High Commissioner and conspiring against the Government. The sentence was subsequently confirmed by the Court of Appeal.

CAPTAIN ELLICE

Will the Government take steps to get some of the sentence remitted?

EARL PERCY

I do not think it is a question in which the Government can properly interfere.

CAPTAIN ELLICE

But the High Commissioner is appointed by the Government.
