HC Deb 28 April 1904 vol 133 cc1436-7
MR. SCHWANN

To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any practical response has been made by estate owners in Ceylon to the information as to the terms on which Government aid can be obtained by planters towards the establishment of estate schools and procedure for obtaining registration of them, as set out in the late Governor Sir West Ridgeway's letter and memorandum to the Planters' Association of Ceylon, of 16th November last.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton.) I have no information as to this particular point. Before making inquiry I propose to await the arrival of the Report of the Committee on Education, which the Governor stated some weeks ago was being printed and would be sent shortly. In his telegram on the subject dated 10th March, the Governor added that steps are being taken to submit definite proposals as to estate schools.
