HC Deb 26 May 1903 vol 122 c1802
MR. SULLIVAN (Westmeath, S)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will state the names of the coal collieries in Great Britain where female labour is employed at or about the pits.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. AKERS DOUGLAS, Kent, St. Augustine's)

I can only refer the hon. Member to Table 4 of Part I. of the Annual General Report on Mines and Quarries, which shows the total number of women employed aboveground at mines in each of the inspectors' districts. There are no women employed underground. Also in the list of mines which is published annually the number of persons employed at each colliery is given; but men and women are not distinguished in this Return, and, as at present advised, I do not see my way to making out the figures separately for each colliery.
