HC Deb 18 May 1903 vol 122 c927
MR. SEYMOUR ORMSBY-GORE (Lincolnshire, Gainsborough)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade if he is prepared to initiate legislation to promote light railways in the poorer agricultural districts of England similar to that exercised in the congested districts in Ireland.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE (Mr. GERALD BALFOUR,) Leeds, Central

The Light Railways Act already affords considerable facilities for the promotion of light railways in poor districts, and the Treasury is prepared to give a liberal interpretation to the provisions of Sections 4 and 5 of the statute providing for monetary assistance from the State. I fear I cannot promise legislation on the lines suggested by my hon. friend.
