HC Deb 13 May 1903 vol 122 cc528-9
MR. MANSFIELD (Lincolnshire, Spalding)

To ask the President of the Local Government Board has the attention of the Local Government Board been drawn to the statements made at a recent meeting of the Peterborough Rural District Council as to overcrowding in the villages in the district; and, if so, whether he can bring pressure on the authority to provide further accommodation.

(Answered by Mr. Walter Long.) I am aware of the statements at the meeting referred to. I understand that the cases of overcrowding were reported by the Inspector of Nuisances to the Rural District Council, who have caused the usual statutory notices for the abatement of the nuisance to be served. The time allowed by the notices has not yet expired. It is stated that the overcrowding is caused by the number of migratory railway workmen, who are from time to time employed in the district by the companies without provision being made for housing them. Some new cottages are, however, now being erected. The Rural District Council appear to be fully alive to their responsibilities in the matter, and it is owing to their action that the cases referred to have been brought to light.
