HC Deb 11 May 1903 vol 122 c304
CAPTAIN NORTON (Newington, W.)

I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether he will grant a Committee of Inquiry into the alleged grievances of the Customs watchers.

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. ELLIOT,) Durham

Having regard to the improvements made in the pay and position of Customs watchers in 1900, at a total increased cost of £3,000 per annum, and to the large number of candidates for the post of watcher, I do not consider that any necessity exists, either for further concessions or for a Committee of Inquiry.
