HC Deb 05 May 1903 vol 121 cc1374-5
MR. TULLY

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether the Local Government Board can state the number of cottages erected under the Labourers (Ireland) Acts, in cases where compulsory powers were sought when applying for the Provisional Orders, and the number of cottage erected where the local authorities sought no compulsory powers when proceeding to put those Acts into force.

MR. WYNDHAM

The total number of cottages included in Provisional Orders which were either confirmed or made absolute was 19,541 on 31st March, 1902. Of these, the number included in Orders under which the sites were acquired by agreement was 289. In many cases, however, where compulsory powers are sought, it is believed that terms are subsequently arranged between the parties, thus rendering unnecessary the enforcement of compulsory powers. But the Board has no material that would enable it to say how many cottages were erected on sites acquired by agreement or taken compulsorily, as the case may be.
