HC Deb 01 May 1903 vol 121 c1073
MR. HAYDEN (Roscommon, S.)

To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether he is aware that the tradesmen employed in Dundrum Criminal Lunatic Asylum are compelled to work every second week for ninety-nine hours fifty-five minutes, and for seventy-seven and a half hours during each of the other weeks; and that they have to discharge the duties of attendant during portion of the day in addition to performing their work as tradesmen; and whether he will cause inquiry into the matter with the object of limiting their duty to the work of their respective trades and lessening their hours of labour.

(Answered by Mr. Atkinson.) The working hours of the tradesmen attendants at this asylum are eighty-seven and sixty-six in alternate weeks. They discharge the duties of attendant during a portion of the day in addition to performing their work as tradesmen. But no grievance arises out of this state of facts, inasmuch as they accepted their appointments subject to this condition. The matter has already been fully investigated, and it is not proposed to make any change in the conditions of their service.
