HC Deb 27 March 1903 vol 120 cc468-9
MR. CHANNING (Northamptonshire, E.)

To ask the hon. Member for the Tunbridge Division of Kent, as a Charity Commissioner, whether, seeing that, in the case of the Dunwich Town Lands some years ago, the Charity Commissioners held that the trustees could not sell the land by private negotiation to a single purchaser without first giving an opportunity to the public to purchase by tender or otherwise, the Commissioners will apply the same rule to the proposed sale by the trustees of the Burghclere Poors Land.

(Answered by Mr. Griffith Boscawen.) As has already been explained, in the case of the Burghclere Poors Land the trustees have a statutory power to sell without reference to the Commissioners and the Commissioners have accordingly no jurisdiction to direct the proceedings to be taken.
