HC Deb 26 March 1903 vol 120 c305
MR. FLYNN (Cork Co., N.)

I beg to ask Mr. Attorney General for Ireland whether his attention has been called to the fact that during the proceedings at the Cork Spring Assizes in the case of Andrew Moore, charged with the offence of murder, fifty-seven jurors were ordered to stand by on behalf of the Crown; and, if so, will he say whether this action was taken with the sanction of the Irish law officers.

THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL FOR IRELAND (Mr. ATKINSON,) Londonderry, N.

Fifteen jurors were challenged by the prisoner, and fifty-five were, by the Crown solicitor, acting in pursuance of the circular of February, 1894, ordered to stand aside. No special directions were given by the law officers.

MR. FLYNN

Was not this prisoner a Catholic? Will the right hon. Gentleman give instructions to put an end to this practice?

MR. ATKINSON

I believe both the prisoner and the deceased were Protestants. No instructions will be given to stop the practice.

CAPTAIN DONELAN (Cork, E.)

How long are these scandals to be committed?

MR. SPEAKER

Order, order!
