HC Deb 09 March 1903 vol 119 c94
MR. HARMSWORTH

TO ask the Secretary of State for War whether the Militia and Volunteer staffs are counted towards the strength of the battalions to which they are attached, and also towards the strength of the battalions to which they belong in the Regular Army; and also what is the total number of both staffs.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Brodrick.) The permanent staff of the Militia and Volunteers are shown on the strength of the Militia and Volunteers respectively, and not on the strength of the Regular Army, except in the case of the officers of the Royal Engineers, who are shown on the strength of the Regular Army only. The total numbers, including all ranks, are: Militia, 4,211 (1st February); Volunteers, 1,983 (1st January).
