HC Deb 05 March 1903 vol 118 cc1546-7
MR. MILDMAY (Devonshire,) Totnes

To ask the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been drawn to the effect of the recent gales upon the cottage and foreshore at Hallsands, South Devon, consequent upon the dredging which has been permitted by the Board in connection with the Government works at Devonport; and whether the Board of Trade propose to take any action in the matter.

(Answered by Mr. Gerald Balfour.) My attention has not previously been drawn to this matter. I may, however, mention that the licence granted to Sir J. Jackson, Limited, to dredge in the vicinity of Hallsands was cancelled in January, 1902, and the Board were in formed by the Coast Guard in May, 1902, that no materials had been dredged since that date and that the beach had made to such an extent that it was normal. I will, however, make some inquiries.
