§ GENERAL LAURIE (Pembroke and Haverfordwest)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether, in the answer given to the hon. Member for Exeter on 7th November,† stating the average annual cost of a private of each branch of the service, the calculation was made on the actual cost of the individual private, or whether the statement covered the cost of regimental officers and staff in the several corps, as well as of women borne on the strength: and, further, to ask the average annual cost of a private of the Loyal Garrison Regiment, including the married establishment.
LORD STANLEYIn reply to the first part of the Question, as regards the Regular forces, the calculation was based on the actual cost of the individual private; in the case of the Militia, Yeomanry and Volunteers it included the cost of the staff. The average annual cost of a private of the Garrison Regiment including the married establishment, but excluding the regimental officers and staff, may be taken at £ 69 16s. 9d.
