HC Deb 04 March 1903 vol 118 c1363
MR. GIBSON BOWLES

I beg to ask the First Lord of the Treasury, have His Majesty's Government now considered the Report of Captain Tizard, R. N., and Mr. Shield, dated 20th June 1902, on the proposal to construct a harbour and dock on the eastern side of Gibraltar; if so, what decision has been arrived at, and what steps is it intended to take to carry out that decision?

THE PRIME MINISTER AND FIRST LORD OF THE TREASURY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR,) Manchester, E.

The report of Captain Tizard has been considered, but the Government do not think that the great expenditure which is involved would bring with it any adequate result from the point of view of Imperial defence.

In answer to a further Question by Mr. GIBSON BOWLES.

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

said: My hon. friend has no right to suppose that adequate security to Gibraltar would be secured by the harbour which he desires to see built.
