HC Deb 29 June 1903 vol 124 c804
MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether, having regard to the fact that the members of the Royal Irish Constabulary in the cities of Londonderry, Cork, Waterford, and Belfast have numbers on their uniforms, he will direct the wearing of numbers on their uniforms by members of the Royal Irish Constabulary stationed in country districts.

MR. WYNDHAM

This question has repeatedly been raised in the House, and, as at present advised, I see no reasons for arriving at a different conclusion from that come to by my predecessors—namely, that the proposed change is inexpedient and undesirable.

MR. SWIFT MACNEILL

What is the police objection?

MR. WYNDHAM

Officers of the force may be employed in any part of Ireland, and there would be difficulty in working out the scheme.
