HC Deb 23 June 1903 vol 124 cc264-5
MR. O'DOWD (Sligo, S.)

I beg to ask Mr. Attorney-General for Ireland whether, and, if so, when, he intends to amend the law relating to contempt of Court in Ireland by the introduction of a measure restricting the power at present enjoyed by Irish judges, of sentencing Members of this House and others whom they may adjudge guilty of contempt to unlimited terms of imprisonment.

THE ATTORNEY-GENERAL FOR IRELAND (Mr. ATKINSON,) Londonderry, N.

The Government have already stated that they do not consider that there is any necessity for legislation in this matter. The provisions of the law dealing with contempt of Court are the same in both countries and are well understood.

MR. DELANY (Queen's County, Ossory)

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman if he considers desirable a state of the law which allows the sending of political opponents to gaol for an indefinite period?

MR. SPEAKER

Order, order! That is a matter of opinion and not a question of fact.
