§ SIR JOHN COLOMB (Great Yarmouth)To ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can state the amount per head of population of Imperial and local taxation respectively, and also of the total value of the trade of the United Kingdom for each of the years 1882 and 1902, excluding taxes raised for the purposes of the war in South Africa.
(Answered by Mr. Ritchie.) The amount per head of population of Imperial taxation is estimated to have been as follows: 1882–3, £2 1s. 8d; 1902–3 (omitting revenue estimated to have been devoted to war purposes), £2 15s. 11d. The amount of local rates in the United Kingdom per head of population is estimated to have been:—1882–3, 17s. 3d.; 1899–1900 (figures for later year not yet available), £1 3s. 3d. I cannot give any estimate of the total trade (which would of course include the home trade) of the United Kingdom, but the total value of imports and exports per head of population was:—1882, £20 8s. 10d.; 1902, £20 18s. 5d. These last figures are shown for each year in the Statistical Abstract.
