§ SIR HOWARD VINCENT (Sheffield Central)To ask the President of the Board of Trade if he can state what was the rise in the price of wheat in Great Britain at the time of the recent Leiter corner in wheat at Chicago.
(Answered by Mr. Gerald Balfour.) The mean of the monthly average Gazette prices of British wheat in England and Wales for January, February, and March 1898 was about 35s. 2d. per quarter. The average for the months immediately following were April, 36s.; May, 46s.; June. 43s. 7d.; July, 37s. 5d.; August, 33s. 1d.; the average falling to 26s. 5d. in September. The highest point touched was 48s. 1d. in the week ending 21st May.
