HC Deb 13 July 1903 vol 125 c389
MR. CATHCART WASON (Orkney and Shetland)

To ask the Postmaster-General if he will issue regulations as to the pace at which motor mails may be driven in the public streets; and if he will consider the advisability of adopting some mechanical apparatus which will show the speed at which such cars have been driven during the day.

(Answered by Mr. Austen Chamberlain.) The regulations as to the speed of motor vans, to which motors used for the mail service as well as other motors must conform, are laid down by the Local Government Board, and in drawing up the time tables for motor mail vans regard is paid to the authorised speed. I do not think it is necessary to adopt a mechanical apparatus for registering the speed of motor mail vans. We do not use any high speed motors.
