HC Deb 06 April 1903 vol 120 cc1114-5
SIR MANCHERJEE BHOWNAGGREE (Bethnal Green, N. E.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India if he has received any Report from the Government of India as to the result of the Conference between that Government and a Commission which was sent from Natal recently to India for the purpose of settling the conditions regarding indentured Coolie labour; whether, on the expiry of their indentures, the labourers will be at liberty to remain in the Colony without being compelled to pay a poll tax; and if he will lay the Papers on this subject on the Table of the House.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Lord GEORGE HAMILTON, Middlesex, Ealing)

I have not yet received a Report from the Government of India on the subject referred to in the hon. Member's Question.

SIR MANCHERJEE BHOWNAGGREE

Will the noble Lord ask the Government of India for an early statement on the subject?

LORD GEORGE HAMILTON

I quite admit the importance of the subject and I have no doubt that the Government of India will report soon.
