HC Deb 07 November 1902 vol 114 c386
MR. CHANNING (Northamptonshire, E.)

To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in the distribution of the two millions to persons other than burghers who have suffered losses because of the war, compensation will be given to those British firms who declined to remain in Johannesburg and Pretoria after the beginning of the war, to help the Boers by continuing to trade with them, and were in consequence exposed to losses by confiscation of stock-in-trade and otherwise.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain H.) The only limitation with regard to those who will be entitled to participate in the grant of £2,000,000 on proof of war losses, is that companies and large firms will be excluded, in accordance with the principle on which compensation has been awarded in Natal.
