To ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can state the number of appeals from income tax assessments in the Athlone district which have been lodged this year, also the increased amount assessed over the past year; and whether he is aware that dissatisfaction exists among traders in the Athlone district at the manner in which the surveyor is increasing their assessments.

(Answered by Mr. Ritchie.) The number of appeals for 1902–3 has been 184. The amounts of profits assessed has been £211,160, as against £208,682 in 1901–2, an increase of about £2,500. The Board of Inland Revenue are not aware of any dissatisfaction among the traders of Athlone at the way in which the surveyor has increased their assessments.
