§ SIR CHARLES DILKE (Gloucestershire, Forest of Dean)To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether the sanction of the Secretary of State to the recent increase of taxation in Labuan was obtained in advance.
(Answer.) The case is not one in which the Royal instructions made it necessary to obtain the Secretary of State's sanction in advance. I have now under consideration a petition from the inhabitants of Labuan with respect to taxation and other matters.—(Colonial Office.)
