HC Deb 24 March 1902 vol 105 c840
MR. JAMES O'CONNOR

I beg to ask Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the late Lord Farnham has bequeathed to his eldest son the arrears of rent on his estate; whether he has ascertained the amount of those arrears; and, if so, whether estate or death duties have been paid on them.

* THE CHANCELLOR OF the EXCHEQUER (Sir M. HICKS BEACH,) Bristol, W.

I have no knowledge of the precise terms of Lord Farnham's will, but if arrears of rents on his estate were bequeathed as stated in the question, the valuation of them would, no doubt, be made in the usual way, according to the probabilities of their realisation, and death duties would be payable on the amount.
