HC Deb 18 March 1902 vol 105 cc325-6
MR. STUART SAMUEL (Tower Hamlets, Whitechapel)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Agriculture whether, in consideration of the Argentine Republic having removed restrictions upon the entry of British pedigree stock into that country, and the period since an authenticated case of foot and mouth disease has occurred in the Republic, he will take steps to increase the present meat supply by authorising the entry of Argentine cattle for slaughter.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF AGRICULTURE (Mr. HANBURY,) Preston

There is not, and there ought not to be, any connection between the two subjects. The period since what is described in the question as an authenticated case of foot and mouth disease is too short to allow me to assume that the disease has entirely disappeared. Even if it had disappeared, the laws as regards the importation of stock into Argentina are not yet such as in our opinion to afford reasonable security against the introduction of the disease.
