HC Deb 13 March 1902 vol 104 c1259
MR. THOMAS BAYLEY (Derbyshire, Chesterfield)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War if he can state the number of horses bought for military purposes in the United Kingdom and shipped to South Africa during the last two years; and have the horse sales and fairs in the United Kingdom been regularly attended by representatives of the Remount Department with a view of buying British horses.

LORD STANLEY

The number of horses purchased in the United Kingdom in 1900 and 1901 was 60,059, of which about 85 per cent. were shipped to South Africa. Remount officers attend horse fairs and sales whenever it is considered desirable.
