To ask the Secretary of State for India whether the East India Railway have placed an order for locomotives with a German firm.

(Answer.) I am informed that an order for thirty-two locomotives was placed by the East Indian Railway Company with a German firm which tendered at a price nearly 20 per cent, lower, and for delivery nearly 25 per cent, sooner than the English firm whose tender stood next.—(India Office.)
