HC Deb 31 January 1902 vol 102 c28
MR. CAWLEY (Lancashire, Prestwich)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if anything further has been done in the matter of the British claims arising out of the disturbances in Turkey in 1895 and 1896, having regard to the fact that the French and American claims have been paid.

MR. A. J. BALFOUR (for Lord CRANBORNE)

As I informed the House last session, the Porte has always refused to admit liability for these claims. There is, however, reason to believe that arrangements are in progress for satisfying them, and that British claimants will receive treatment not less favourable than those of other nationalities. The matter is engaging the constant attention of His Majesty's Ambassador at Constantinople.
