GIBSON BOWLES (Lynn Regis)I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War, what portion of the pay of Colonial troops employed in South Africa is borne by the respective colonies where those troops were raised; and what portion of the expense of equipping those troops and of transporting them to the theatre of war is borne by the colonies.
§ MR. BRODRICKApproximately, the cost of the purely local troops employed locally is borne by the colonies. The cost of the other troops, including the oversea contingents, is borne by Imperial funds. In the case of some of the latter corps, which were raised in the early part of the war, the cost of raising, equipping, and transporting them was borne by the colonies. It is impossible at present to give any figures.
