§ MR. WILLIAM REDMONDI beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, if he can state the number of persons detained in the Ennis Inebriate Reformatory since its opening; and whether any steps have been taken to call the attention of the judicial authorities in Ireland to their powers of sentencing persons to this institution in Ennis.
§ MR. WYNDHAMTwelve males and twenty-two females. The numbers under detention at present are nine males and eighteen females. Magistrates in Petty Sessions are not authorised to commit offenders to this institution; their power is confined to taking depositions. The Higher Courts are fully aware of the powers confrered upon them by Statute.
