HC Deb 28 February 1902 vol 104 cc9-10
MR. SCHWANN (Manchester, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India, whether bonuses are now being given or are due to time-expired British soldiers in India; and, if so, will the cost be laid upon that country or upon Imperial Funds, as the additional expense has been caused by the war in South Africa.

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Lord G. HAMILTON,) Middlesex, Ealing

Bounties have been given †See preceding Volume, p. 1278. to all the time-expired soldiers in India who have extended their service to complete twelve, years with the Colours. It has been agreed that half the cost of these bounties shall be defrayed from Indian revenues, in consideration of the fact that India benefits by a saving in transport charges and by retaining the service of seasoned soldiers.
