HC Deb 27 February 1902 vol 103 c1291
MR. COGHILL (Stoke-on-Trent)

I beg to ask the President of the Local Gevernment Board whether his attention has been called to legislation recently passed in France and Germany with the object of making vaccination and revaccination compulsory on all the population in these two countries; and whether he has any information as to the success of such legislation in diminishing the number of cases of smallpox.

THE SECRETARY TO THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. Grant Lawson, Yorkshire, N.R., Thirsk)

I understand that under a law made this month vaccination and re-vaccination will be rendered compulsory in France. In Germany, vaccination and re-vaccination have been compulsory on the population generally since 1874. Information obtained by the Royal Commission on Vaccination, and referred to in their Report, shows that the system has been highly beneficial in diminishing smallpox.
