CHANNINGI beg to ask the Secretary of State for War, whether Mr. Marais, who was deported from the Paarl to Beautfort West, and imprisoned in August last on an allegation of infringement of martial law regulations, has ever been tried for this alleged offence; whether he is aware that Major General Wynne, the Commanding Officer of the Cape Colony District, made an affidavit before the Supreme Court at Cape Town, on 6th September, 1901, in which he deposed that Mr. Marais would be tried as soon as possible by a Military Court and either acquitted or detained in custody; whether Mr. Marais has been either acquitted or convicted by such a Military Court; and, if convicted, can he state what sentence has been passed on him, and where he is now imprisoned or detained.
