To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether the appointment of Mr. George M' Donald as Master of Lismore Workhouse has yet been sanctioned by the Local Government Board; what are the usual tests as to qualification imposed on persons elected to the position of workhouse master before the appointment is sanctioned; and whether the Local Government Board has been requested by the Lismore Board of Guardians to sanction Mr. M'Donald's appointment.

(Answered by Mr. Wyndham.) The appointment has not yet been sanctioned. Candidates for the position are required to possess an elementary knowledge of arithmetic and English composition. Mr. M 'Donald has recently been examined in these subjects, and the matter is under the Board's consideration. The reply to the concluding inquiry is in the affirmative.
