HC Deb 08 August 1902 vol 112 cc1118-9
LORD HUGH CECIL (Greenwich)

To ask the President of the Local Government Board whether his attention has been drawn to the difficulties attending the treatment and care of feeble-minded paupers in workhouses; and whether he will consider the propriety of appointing a Departmental Committee to inquire and report on the matter.

(Answered by Mr. Walter Long.) The case of the feeble-minded in workhouses has been brought before the Local Government Board, and, at the request of the National Association for promoting the welfare of persons of this kind, my predecessor obtained some statistics, which were communicated to the Association. I shall be happy to consider any further representations which may be made on the subject, but I am not at present prepared to say that it would lie desirable to appoint a Departmental Committee with regard to it.
