HC Deb 22 April 1902 vol 106 c932
MR. H. D. GREENE (Shrewsbury)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for India whether, in view of the announcement that a grant in aid will be given from the Imperial funds to the West Indian Sugar Colonies, it is intended to assist Indian native and Mauritius sugar growers by the imposition of import duties against the Austrian and German cartels until the bounties are abolished in accordance with the terms of the Brussels Sugar Convention.

LORD G. HAMILTON

There are countervailing duties on sugar in operation in India against the bounty or cartel system of foreign countries, and if these duties are proved to be insufficient it is in the power of the Government of India to raise them.
