HC Deb 15 May 1901 vol 94 c231

[SECOND READING]

Order for Second Reading read.

Motion made, and Question proposed. "That the Bill be now read a second time."

Objection having been taken to the Second Reading—

THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD (Mr. WALTER LONG,) Bristol, S.

I hope the hon. Member will not press his objection to the Second Reading of this Bill. The principle contained in it is one which has met with general acceptance on the part of the friendly societies of the country. It is a measure which has been considered most carefully this year. I agree that the Bill will require some Amendment, because I am not quite sure that as it is drafted at present it carries out precisely the objects which the promoters desire. Under these circumstances I do hope that my hon. friend will withdraw his objection, and that the House will assent to the Second Reading.
